Birds of a Feather

This past weekend, my boys were invited to Palmer Farms, our neighbors, beautiful rural property with raised garden beds, chickens, and plenty of room for kids to explore.

The Palmers are about as kind as people come.

I first really appreciated Dr. Sarah Palmer, DDS several years ago when Blake was having a dental issue. We happened to be at Bostwick Lake Inn, and instead of telling me to call the office and make an appointment, she simply took a look right there. We have been going to her office ever since.

Her husband, Jon, has always been just as sweet to my boys. He has shared fishing poles, taken time to talk with them, and even bought them candy out of the blue.

Yes, the irony of a dentist’s husband buying kids candy is not lost on me. haha

I do not know Jon especially well yet, but he may be my new BFF after sharing copious amounts of produce, pesto, and delicious kale soup with me. And according to his dad, when Jon is interested in something, he goes all in. Right now, that something is gardening.

The boys got to walk through the raised beds, learn about vegetables, and see how things actually grow. Then came the chickens. At first, they were excited just to feed them. Then Jon let them hold the birds. Then they started naming them.

Game over.

It has only been a few days, and they are already asking when they can go back.

I think that is one of the things I appreciate most about living in Rockford. Of course, we have beautiful lakes, trails, farms, and a great downtown, but the real value is the people. The ones who take an extra few minutes with your kids, invite them into an experience, and make them feel welcome.

I am grateful my boys get to grow up in a community where an ordinary morning can turn into something they are still talking about days later.
