MPLP Session VI – Frankenmuth, MI
Our sixth session of the Michigan Political Leadership Program took us to Frankenmuth, Michigan, a place my parents tell me I visited as a little kid, but I was too young to remember. Let me just say, OMGosh… it was cute as heck! It felt like stepping back in time, almost how I imagine Disney must have been when it first opened, or like Cypress Gardens when I was little (minus the rides).
We checked in at the Bavarian Inn Hotel and kicked things off with their famous chicken dinner. Along with the delicious food, we learned about Frankenmuth’s tradition of “breaking bread” and how the chicken dinner has become a beloved local staple.
Our evening program featured a Lobbyist Panel with John Boothroyd (Michigan Sugar Company), John Kaczynski (Saginaw Valley State University, MPLP Alumni 2012), and Jimmy Greene (Jimmy Greene & Associates), and Ken Horn (Great Lakes Bay Regional Alliance). They spoke candidly about their work, the importance of never lying, and holding true to your values. And yes, I even learned a surprising amount about sugar beets, which turned out to be fascinating!
Afterward, we walked down to the Bavarian Belle Riverboat for a cruise and reception with the Henry Marsh Fellows. It was a great networking opportunity, and after the cruise, a few of us grabbed a bite at Tiffany’s downtown before heading back to the hotel for nightcaps and some good old-fashioned political debates. (My roommate Kasi and I can’t help ourselves—we love bringing people together.)
The next morning, we started with breakfast and a Social Media presentation from Graham Filler (McAlvey Merchant & Associates, MPLP Alumni 2012). He shared his insights on how to engage audiences in the digital age.
Then came a session on Communicating Your Message with Josh Pugh (Michigan State Housing Development Authority). Josh quickly became one of my favorite speakers to date and that wasn’t even because he highlighted the importance of direct mail. Us printers love to hear that!
We wrapped up with a Bay Region Overview by John Kaczynski. While my heart and priorities are firmly rooted on the west side of the state (we’re just better, after all 😉), it was eye-opening to learn about the unique challenges and opportunities in the Bay region.
This session was the perfect mix of small-town charm, solid learning, and meaningful conversations. And yes, Frankenmuth has officially won me over.
