Blythefield–Boulder Connector, Tunnel Ground Breaking

Direct from Kent County Administrator, Al Vanderberg’s e-blast:

Our Parks Department hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on April 30 to mark the start of construction on a new pedestrian tunnel under Northland Drive - an important project that will create a safer, stronger connection to the emerging South Rogue River Trail and the growing Grand River Greenway.

This effort focuses on improving connectivity by linking communities, parks, and people, while removing a significant safety barrier along one of the busiest roads in northern Kent County. It also moves the region closer to a seamless trail network that enhances quality of life and expands access to the outdoors for residents of all ages and abilities. Once complete, the project will help connect a 23-mile stretch from Millennium Park to Lowell, strengthening ties to the Grand River and to one another.

The effort is made possible through $10 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA)funding awarded by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to Downtown Grand Rapids Inc., along with the support of Kent County leadership and community partners. Construction will take place in phases, with completion anticipated in late fall 2026.
