Kent County Ranks Among Healthiest in Nation, But Challenges Remain

In the latest annual health assessment by the University of Wisconsin, Kent County has been ranked in the healthiest quartile of counties in the United States for both health outcomes and factors. The study evaluates categories such as premature death, quality of life, birth outcomes, academic achievements, economic status, environmental quality, and behaviors.

"We are pleased to report that Kent County continues to rank in the healthiest quartile of counties in both health outcomes and factors," said Adam London, Administrative Health Officer for Kent County.

Kent County boasts a life expectancy average of 78.7 years, which is higher than both the Michigan average of 76.6 years and the national average of 77.6 years. Additionally, the county's premature death rates are lower than both state and national averages.

However, Kent County faces significant health challenges. The rate of sexually transmitted illnesses in the county is 586.7 chlamydia cases per 100,000 people, higher than Michigan’s 452.4 and the national average of 495.5. Furthermore, alcohol is more frequently a factor in fatal auto accidents in Kent County (33%) compared to Michigan (30%) and the nation (26%). The air quality in Kent County is also a concern, with fine particulate matter levels at 8.1 micrograms per cubic meter, compared to 6.8 micrograms in Michigan and 7.4 micrograms nationally.

"These measures, compiled from multiple data sets in the County Health Rankings, are among the many sources of information we watch closely as we work to serve a healthy community for all," London added.

The Kent County Health Department continues to monitor these metrics and address the county's health challenges. In the next newsletter, London plans to share key findings from the Kent County Community Health Needs Assessment.

"We have a lot of work to do, but I am genuinely grateful for all you do to make Kent County a healthier place to live, work, and play," said London.
