MPLP: Session VII Lansing

August 15–16, 2025
East Lansing Marriott & WKAR Studios – Michigan Political Leadership Program

Session VII of the Michigan Political Leadership Program (MPLP) was one of my favorites so far, Media Weekend! We spent two days learning how to communicate clearly, confidently, and effectively through television, radio, and print. From media interviews to campaign commercials, this session gave us the tools to step in front of the camera and share our message with impact.

For my mock campaign, I decided to run for Kent County Drain Commissioner, a position that perfectly combines my love for community, sustainability, and creative problem-solving. My mock ads and interviews focused on that theme, and it was so much fun to bring it to life on camera.

Anyone who knows me knows I light up in front of a camera or a crowd. I love performing, whether it’s theatre, singing in the band, or talking about causes that matter. This weekend reminded me that communication is leadership, and that sharing your story with authenticity is the key to connection.

Friday, August 15: Getting Grounded in the Process

We kicked off the weekend with dinner at the East Lansing Marriott and two important sessions that laid the foundation for effective campaigning.

Electoral Politics and Voter Turnout

  • Presenter: Cory Smidt, Interim Director, Institute for Public Policy and Social Research at MSU
    We explored what motivates voters, how turnout trends shape elections, and why understanding data is crucial to good public service.

Campaign Fundraising

  • Presenter: Steve Linder, President, Linder and Associates
    Fundraising isn’t just about dollars, it’s about relationships and vision. This talk gave us perspective on the strategy, integrity, and creativity required to build strong campaigns.

The night wrapped up with time to connect with fellow MPLP classmates, always one of the best parts of this journey.

Saturday, August 16: Media Immersion at WKAR Studios

After breakfast and a quick check-out, we headed to WKAR Studios on the Michigan State University campus, home to some of the best media training in the state.

The morning was divided into workshops led by communications professionals, journalists, and former legislators who know the media world inside and out.

Communicating Your Message Workshop

  • Presenter: Rick Jones, Former State Senator, State of Michigan
    We learned the art of concise, meaningful messaging, how to stay on point and deliver with confidence.

Media Interview Workshop

  • Panelists: Randy Hannan (Martin Waymire) & Samantha Shriber (Michigan Senate Correspondent, MIRSnews.com)
    This session simulated real-world interviews, complete with tough questions and time limits. The key takeaway? Preparation, composure, and eye contact are everything.

15-Second Campaign Commercial Workshop

  • Presenter: Sara Wurfel, Chief Communications and Marketing Officer, Michigan Chamber of Commerce (and MPLP alum, Class of 2004)

  • Makeup Artist: Katherine Allman, Clearwater Media Partners
    This was hands-down my favorite part of the day! We each scripted, filmed, and reviewed our own campaign commercial — all within 15 seconds. It was equal parts nerve-wracking and exhilarating.

    Just a reminder this is a mock-campaign, not real! But take a look! LOL

Radio Interview Workshop

  • Presenter: Vickie Thomas, Former City Beat Reporter, WWJ News radio 950
    Radio forces you to focus on tone and storytelling — no visuals, no cues, just your voice. It was powerful practice in staying genuine while getting to the point.

Takeaway: Communication is Leadership

MPLP’s Media Weekend was more than just camera time, it was a reminder that communication is at the heart of leadership. The way we speak, listen, and show up shapes how people trust and connect with us.

For me, this session reinforced the value of authenticity. Whether it’s singing on stage, talking about local issues, or stepping in front of the lens, the goal is the same: to use your voice to bring people together.
