Start of Summer Parade
There is something special about a hometown parade. The music, decorated vehicles, children lining the streets with bags ready for candy and neighbors calling out to one another create a community moment that is hard to replicate anywhere else.
This year’s Rockford Start of Summer Parade was such a fun event, and walking the route alongside family, friends and neighbors made it even more meaningful. The Chamber told us we would need approximately 5,000 pieces of candy. We came prepared with 7,500 pieces — and still ran out! That tells you everything you need to know about the turnout and energy along the route.
Parades also carry a little nostalgia for me. Growing up, I was a parade kid, too. My parents often had us walking in parades to support various candidates and community causes. At the time, I’m not sure I fully appreciated that we were building a family tradition, but it only makes sense that I would continue it with my own children.
Blake, Dax and Parks are already old pros. In past years, we have walked with Katie DeBoer and Bridgeway Community Church, but this was the first time we were the organizers. Watching my kids pass out candy and take part in the celebration brought everything full circle. I hope they remember these days the same way I remember walking alongside my parents.
Events like this only happen because people are willing to show up and help. A heartfelt thank-you to my parents, Amy and Walt Gutowski; our neighbors, Shawn and Sara Sremba; Brooks Chop; Dr. Tory; Michelle and Hattie Haddad; Wyatt Douma; Amy and Kevin Dood; Tarryn and Jax LaFrenerie; and my colleague and friend Brandon Erhart.
And, of course, thank you to my husband, Jake, and our kids, Blake, Dax and Parks, for helping organize shirts, haul candy and walk the packed parade route.
Most of all, thank you to everyone who came downtown and helped create such a positive atmosphere. Community grows when people show up, greet their neighbors and participate in the life of the place they call home.
What was your favorite part of the weekend? I would love to hear from you at jes@swiftprinting.com.
